Why Do Bunnies Represent Easter?

Why Do Bunnies Represent Easter?

30th Mar 2017

With themes of rebirth and starting anew – Spring and Easter are perfectly interlinked. With its origins in Christianity, summing up the sacrifice, death and rebirth of Jesus Christ, Easter has arguably grown beyond the church and is now a significant time for reflection and celebration. Being a public holiday, it sees families and friends gather together, spending time with one another, even hosting parties for children as they go on Easter egg hunts and eat Easter cakes. The season even has its own counterpoint to Christmas’ Santa Claus, in the shape of the Easter Bunny!

Inside The Warren: The Truth Behind The Easter Bunny.

You can be forgiven for thinking that Easter Bunnies have been a relatively modern, commercial invention – in fact, they actually have quite a long history in folklaw! For ancient people, Spring was a time when the winter went away and thanks to the warmth, animals started to roam the landscape and people started to plant and create food again. Spring was a literal lifeline for them and it coming around again, as soon as possible during a bleak Winter, was the most important aspect of their lives. This perhaps explains why they started to pray to this mysterious season, eventually creating the gods and goddesses that were seemingly protecting their lives by providing a season in which they could grow food and keep livestock.

Another sign that was worshipped thanks to Spring, was that of hares. Due to their reproduction cycle during the season, hares (and rabbits) were seen as signs of fertility and this was taken on by Christianity, with religious iconography relating to ‘The Three Hares’ (perhaps also being a reference to the Holy Trinity) being widespread around the world.

First recorded in 15th Century Germany, Protestants took the hare iconography one step further by having this ancient sign (that was at this point in history, entrenched in Christianity) play the role of a judge, in order to decide which of the young parishioners deserved a reward for their behaviour. From reading that, you can see the correlation that an ‘Easter Hare’ has with Father Christmas!

Since its inception, the role of the Easter Hare changed and he was said to hide eggs for children to find, giving birth to the now-common ‘Easter Egg hunts’ we see nowadays! Today of course, the Easter Hare has been replaced by The Easter Bunny (perhaps because Bunnies are more widespread) and are a significant sign of the season, present as they are on Easter eggs and cakes.
