Tips on Hosting A Toddler Birthday Party

23rd May 2017

Celebrating the birthday of your little one is always special – no matter if they’ve just turned 1 or 21; there’s a sense of pride that can be taken for a parent watching their child celebrate their birthday. Although during their toddler years, it seems to be even more special; being able to reflect on the past year, comparing your child to how they were then, compared to now, realising how much they have grown in such a relative short space of time is one of the best feelings that any parent will experience. This is why to mark the special occasion, parents host parties for their children – whether it’s a small gathering or a large one, as you invite friends, family and neighbors. Full of fun, laughter and of course, no party occasion is complete without the centerpiece: toddler birthday cakes

Planning a party for your child can be fun, yet challenging at the same time – do you know where, when or indeed, what to include? By planning the finest of details in advance, can lead to you hosting an enjoyable, fun (and considering the age of the children – hassle free) party

Here are some tips on hosting a toddler birthday party:

  • Set a (short) time limit – Think of your party as an average day for your child; you yourself will know how long your little one will be able to play for, without growing tired or irritable. Anything between an hour or two would be perfect for them to enjoy themselves, play and eventually grow tired – just in time for their nap! This is why the timing of the party is important too – planning a time during the day, an hour or two before their regular nap time would be ideal.
  • Get your child’s input – Although the big party planning decisions should be made by you, of course, you should still get your child’s opinion on what they would like to have at their party. Not only will this help them to take ownership and control over their big day, helping them to settle into what must be an unfamiliar change in their everyday routine, giving them a say in how their party is themed, for example, will work to help them to have more fun! Aspects such as decorations, birthday cake flavour and even the invitations, are all things that a 3 or 4-year-old could have a great input on
  • Place more focus on the children – Having the parents present at a toddler birthday party is an absolute must – but don’t feel like you have to entertain the adults. Wanting to see their own child have a good time, they’ll understand that your focus will need to placed on keeping the party flowing! Just leave them a selection of sandwiches and with the opportunity to chat with fellow parents, they’ll be fine!
  • Plan activities that are age-appropriate – Young children aren’t really known for being able to concentrate on things for a long period of time – so instead go for activities that are relatively short, don’t require much thought to play and more importantly, are fun! Activities such as pass the ball, follow the leader, musical statues and even a sing-song are all common activities at toddler birthday parties.
  • Think Easy Clean-Up – Any type of party is liable to make a mess, so ensure that if you’re hosting a party at home, that you purchase perishable items that can be cleared and thrown away with ease. Items such as paper decorations, or plastic plates and cups can be recycled quickly and easily, making for a clean home after the party has ended.
