School’s Out for Summer

Schools Out for Summer, so you finally have time to ask the neighbours, friends and family around to enjoy that long awaited garden party!

If you are a smug Cancerian, Leo or Virgo sign lucky enough to be born during the summer month’s you’ll know that party planning is always more fun. The long awaited sun (which may never arrive) in our minds opens a whole range of party options you wouldn’t consider in the winter months.

Drinking a tipple with your cake rather than the standard cup of tea is a particularly exquisite indulgence which must take place during the summer months. As does the BBQ or simply dining al fresco.

Once you have written your list of party essentials…. finger sandwiches, cocktail sausages, bubbly, mini pizzas, trays of large marshmallows you have carefully glued a smartie to the top of each with icing, (and help from your enthralled toddler) you’ll want the centrepiece of your table organised. The Cake.

Cake goes hand in hand with celebrations. While birthday celebrations vary all over the world, most cultures do celebrate the anniversary of birth in some way, and baked sweets like birthday cake are a very important part of the celebration.

Birthdays and other anniversaries involve cake, candles, balloons, and parties year after year and making the cake, which is the spectacle for all to see (and photographed) can be the most stressful and time-consuming part of the party planning.

It is here that the Brilliant Bakers like to step in and whip off your apron, and let you relax. Whether you’re having a party for your kids, or you’re swigging back yet another champagne, wondering where the years have gone and toasting yourself for another year of survival, you might want to ponder where these traditions started.

The story of the celebratory cake goes back to ancient Egypt, when someone was crowned as a pharaoh, they were then considered to be a god. This coronation date was consequently incredibly important, and deemed more important than their actual birthday. In the Bible, there is a reference to the Pharaoh’s coronation day. This is believed to be the first note of a birthday, which was, of course, celebrated, to mark the amazing transition from human into deity.

Cake and candles weren’t part of the Egyptian birthday celebrations. For this, we have the Greeks to thank who celebrated the birthdays of gods and goddesses, rather than of us mere mortals. The Greeks would honour their lunar goddess, Artemis, by making moon-shaped cakes and placing candles on top of them. The candles were there to represent the light of the moon, and this was the start of the long-standing tradition.

In the eighteenth century, it was the Germans who initiated the celebration of kids birthdays with ‘Kinderfeste,’ and birthday cake was a very important part of this celebration. And not just any birthday cake, it was a cake topped with candles. Every child was given a cake with one candle for every year they had lived, plus one extra to symbolise the hope of living another year. When blowing out the candles, every child had to make a wish, just as we still do today.

At the Brilliant Bakers, we don’t only celebrate birthdays with cake, but we know how to put together creations for all sorts of celebrations, Anniversary’sNew Baby’s or simply sending someone in need of cake a delicious box of Cupcakes.
