The Continuing Appeal of Disney
In recent years, there have been a number of ‘remakes’ of some of Disney’s most classic animations, as the stories have been taken, updated and filmed in live action. Providing a new creative outlet for Disney, these big-budget remakes are set to continue for a number of years yet. Aurora, the star of Sleeping Beauty, was a secondary character in 2014’s Maleficent, which saw the story told from the point-of-view of the villain of the original story. Other remakes have seen the story follow their original protagonists, with 2015’s Cinderella and 2017’s Beauty and The Beast see Cinderella and Belle continue to take centre stage, expanding plots outlined in the original stories. Expected in 2018, is the live action remake of Mulan, followed at some point by Aladdin. Other upcoming ‘non-Princess’ films which, like Maleficent, may differ from their Disney originals, include The Lion King, The Sword and The Stone and Dumbo; all of which have been earmarked for production in the not-too-distant future. With doubtless many more to come, Disney and their various ranges, especially the Princesses, will almost certainly continue to prove popular with young (and not so young!) audiences for quite some time yet!
Beauty and The Beast Film – Belle In Live Action
Out now, is the new live action version of Beauty and The Beast, which has been met with many positive reviews and praised for its inclusive storyline, as well as it’s enjoyment by children and adults alike. The film, which is based on Disney’s original animation (which in turn is based on Jeanne-Marie LaPrince de Beaumont’s version of the fairytale), is set in 16 th Century France and sees a Prince behave unfavourably towards a disguised enchantress, who turns him into a ‘beast’ for his conduct. After being presented with a magical rose, the Prince is mocked; the enchantress telling him that he must learn to ‘love another and earn their love in return’ in order to reverse the spell. Also turning his household staff into inanimate objects, the Prince is told that he has until the last petal of the rose falls away to achieve his goal, or else everyone enchanted, will retain their form forever...
The main protagonist of the story is Belle, a young learned woman who travels to the Prince’s kingdom with her father. After brushing off the less-than-romantic attentions of local huntsman, Gaston, a vain and arrogant man, Belle learns that her Father trespassed upon the Beast’s land and offers herself up for imprisonment in exchange. Getting to know The Beast, the two form a friendship but mistakenly believing The Beast intends to do his daughter harm, her Father enlists the services of Gaston to help to free her...
Being a remake of the 1991 animated classic, the introduction of the modern, live-action version will doubtless see further interest bestowed on Disney’s original Beauty and The Beast by a completely new, young audience. It’s actually the Belle from the original animation that is portrayed as part of the Princesses range and just like the likes of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid, will always be recognised by future generations as one of the most popular Disney Princesses!
